Project Description
Design and fabricate large-scale luggage tag straps and buckles to be displayed on billboards in the following US markets:  NY, NJ, Boston and Southern CA.  Meet an aggressive schedule to deliver 19 pieces with a post date of April 2006.

The Concept
The billboard will be designed and constructed to look like a luggage tag with the strap and buckle extending approximately 10 ft to the left side of the billboard.

Design and Construction
CAD drawings have been created based on the concept artwork provided by CP+B.  The design goals are three-fold:  1) Achieve the desired look, 2) Strength/Safety, and 3) Minimal weight.

Overall Dimensions of Strap/Buckle Extension

Framework
A steel framework with mounting plates has been designed so that each extension may be securely attached to the billboard.  The framework is primarily made of  2.5" square steel tubing,  0.188 wall thickness.  Another leg (at 45 deg) has been included in the design to provide additional support.  All welding is performed by a certified welder.  Click here for additional CAD drawings and detailed information.

Buckle and Strap
The buckle will be constructed of styrene which is vacuum formed, and painted to resemble the silver buckle sample provided by CP+B.
The strap is made from a heavy-weight (18 oz) black vinyl to simulate a leather strap, and is secured in place over a 14-gauge steel wire mesh that is anchored to the main framework.

Installation
The strap/buckle extension is designed to be installed on the left side of the billboard.  The distance from the edge of the billboard is approximately 10 ft.  The framework has been designed to be mounted to a vertical support member (typically an I-beam) that already exists on the back of billboards.  With 400 lbs or less as the goal for the weight of the strap/buckle extension, the billboard installers will need to consider whether reinforcement of the back of the billboard is needed to handle the loading added by the extension.
The luggage strap and buckle extensions must be securely mounted to the billboards to minimize the chance of any portion of the extension coming loose, breaking or falling off.  It is expected that with newer billboard constructions, little to no modifications will be needed, but the billboard installers will ultimately need to determine this.  Tim Vittetoe Originals will collaborate with companies who will perform the installation to ensure safety concerns are addressed and any restrictions are met.  Detailed installation instructions are provided here.

Lifespan
The billboard extensions must look good for a minimum of 12 weeks and will likely be exposed to a full range of weather conditions (extreme cold, heat, wind, rain, sleet, hail, snow, dry and humid conditions). The materials selected have been chosen to ensure this lifespan requirement is met.
